It was many years back when I found a mention about this movie on some website. There was a short briefing about the movie and it said the movie tells about a young woman who has a latex fetish. Of course I got interested about the movie and tried to get it in my hands as soon as possible.
I had my prejudices regarding the movie. Always when I had heard about a woman and latex clothing being in same movie it had been a fetish sex film or some short scene in a movie where some sexy bimbo wears PVC pants and makes it excessive and a joke. I was very happy to find out that this movie wasn't a joke. It was exactly what I had wished for a long time.
Rubbers Ou Onna (also sometimes: "Rabâzu: Oou onna") is a japanese movie from year 2010. It's in japanese language. I didn't have an opportunity to watch the movie with subtitles or dub. Therefore my review is based on my own feelings and to things I saw in the movie.
So the movie is telling a story about a young woman. The movie starts with her going to work. The story continues by showing her everyday life in work and getting home after that. However there can be noticed some hints about her acting in mysterious ways in some situations. This is why the viewer wants to know more about her.
After some time it is made clear to viewers that the woman has a latex fetish. The way this is told and exposed is wonderful. It is not a porn scene and there is nothing too lewd on the movie. The fetish is presented exactly in a way how it could be dealt by a real fetishist in the real life. The fetish is shown as an important part of her life and the whole movie tries to show empathy towards her fetishism.
There are challenges in her life too. She needs to keep this secret of her because others would not understand her. There are also other challenges as she gets interested about a man who wants to visit her apartment. The movie also shows how important the fetish is to a fetishist and how difficult the fetish can be to others to understand or accept. These challenges are part of most of the fetishists lifes and I'm really satisfied how these things are introduced in the movie.
Rubbers Ou Onna is a great movie even if it is a small-budget film and hasn't been in wide distribution. It is a great tool for people who needs help to explain or to understand fetishism. This movie presents fetishism in a warm and positive light and leaves all the porn-relating things, dark and fearsome elements, disapproving and joking away. I really wish there could be more films like this to show the real side of things we have so much prejudices about.
I'd love to watch the film with english or even finnish subtitles so I could understand all the conversations in the movie. Despite the linguistic challenge the movie can still be understood enough even if the watcher couldn't understand japanese.
I warmly recommend getting your hands on this movie if possible.
